The proposal was chosen from several international expert opinions which had been called in. This is one of the largest construction projects in Libya at present. The area is sized 210 hectares and is located in the Southwest of the Libyan capital, directly adjoining the future government district. It borders to the East on the Airport Road, which links downtown to the airport. Moreover, the urban planning factors in the junction of the Airport Road with a second, planned highway that will run East-West.

To date, the Tripoli Gate zone has largely been dedicated to commercial use, but will now in two phases be developed into a mixed-purpose zone with a high proportion of residential buildings of a superior design quality. Office buildings, all the infrastructural facilities required, and public parks focus on a central ribbon that runs North-South and functions as a ventilation corridor, bringing the North winds into the heart of the district. The height of the buildings will taper downwards as they move outwards to the periphery, where it will be between five and eight storeys.

In Phase 1, Jo. Franzke Architekten will handle planning of 4,600 apartments and two 24-storey office high-rises. The existing residential construction will be factored into plans.
