The “Neue Vahr” development dates from 1957 and represents a peak in Modernist urban residential architecture. Taking just one building the, no longer up-to-date, accommodation in buildings blocks was redefined. Combining storeys produced maisonette apartments, a type that up until then had not featured in the quarter. In 2006 the Bremen branch of the Association of German Architects awarded the project a commendation for the “outstanding example, one that is worthy of being copied, of the transformation of no longer up-to-date accommodation into attractive residential units.
